The car that appears in this new series is not the same as the original series. In that one, KITT was Knight Industries Two Thousand and the car was an '82 Pontiac Trans Am Firebird. In this new series, KITT is Knight Industries Three Thousand and is a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR.

KITT is not only not the same in appearance, but also in personality. The new KITT has nothing to do with the original, as he never comments on anything that happened in the original series and, throughout the series, he tries to learn and understand human behavior.

Nevertheless, many of its functions are the same as its predecessor, such as "Turbo Boost", which allows it to jump over obstacles, "Ski Mode", which allows it to stand on two wheels, or "Auto Navigation", a function that allows KITT to drive itself.

Other functions of the new KITT is the "Electromagnetic Pulse" to disable any electronic device and even vehicles, and also the possibility of using firearms such as machine gun turrets or rocket launchers (which it never uses against human targets or living beings). This new KITT does not have molecular armor like the original, but its entire body is covered by a "Nano epidermis" created with nanotechnology, which allows it to self-repair itself.

The first season began on June 6, 2012 and ended on December 10, 2012 with a total of 14 episodes. The first season was filmed on Reeder Road in Dallas, in a rented Phipps Auto store building, which was also featured on the show. The Gas Monkey crew worked in the back room, while Rawlings brought Corvettes, Cadillacs and other vehicles that were to be "flash sales" to Dewaine Phipps to get it back in business. During the first season, Rawlings also hired an office assistant named Christie Brimberry, who makes several appearances in the series.
